The Edenton Town Council approved an updated salary schedule that raises the top pay band for police captain and police chief, a change staff said was needed to remain competitive in recruitment.
Town manager Corey Gooden told council that recruiting produced applicants whose expected pay placed them at or above existing maxima. The council approved raising the police captain band from 22 to 25 and the police chief band from 29 to 30 to give staff more flexibility during negotiations.
Gooden said the application period for police chief closed that day; the town will begin initial interviews and a selection process this month. He also said the town is preparing an employment agreement for at least an interim chief so day-to-day operations can continue while the full selection proceeds. The interim chief’s start date was described as Aug. 1, with the current chief scheduled to retire at the end of September.
A council motion to adopt the revised salary schedule passed by voice vote with no recorded objections in the transcript.
The changes apply to the recruitment effort only; councilors noted that any hiring and employment agreements will be handled in accordance with established personnel procedures.
