Shauna Wilson, the mayor of Waynesville, presented a certificate and a city coin on behalf of the city to recognize a family-owned jewelry shop as the February 2025 business spotlight.
"We are honored. You have chosen to continue to make Waynesville your home," Mayor Wilson said as she presented the certificate and the coin and offered a small gift to help keep the owner warm in cold weather.
The presenter, who described the shop's family history, said the business was founded in 1971 by the speaker's grandparents, Ursula and Geraldine Simmerly. "Our business started in 1971," the presenter said, adding that they began working there in high school and came on full time after graduating in 1975. "I've been here all 54 years," the presenter said, and noted that the presenter's son, Jeremy, has worked at the shop since about 2007.
The presenter described the shop's work: jewelry repair, diamond setting and sales of diamond wedding rings, chains and bracelets. On hours, the presenter said the store is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and closed on Saturdays.
Mayor Wilson closed the brief recognition by urging residents to support local businesses, saying that the community and the city benefit when small businesses remain successful. There were no votes or formal actions recorded during the recognition.
