Freehold council formalizes twinning with Rathangan, Ireland, citing Springsteen family ties

Freehold Borough formally adopted a resolution authorizing a twinning agreement with Rathangan, County Kildare, Ireland, at its March 18 regular meeting, marking the culmination of a weekend of visits and events with a seven-member Rathangan delegation.

Mayor Kevin Kane introduced the twinning resolution and read its text into the record, noting the decision followed exchanges of letters and a delegation visit that included a parade and reception. The resolution cites Rathangan (population 3,263) and Freehold as communities bound by cultural and ancestral ties, and specifically references musician Bruce Springsteen's family origins in Rathangan as a point of shared history. "We're gonna definitely chalk that up to the luck of the Irish," the mayor said when describing the parade turnout.

Members of the Rathangan delegation thanked the borough for its hospitality and presented ceremonial gifts, including a memorial plaque described as "my hometown to your hometown" and a piece of bog oak carved by Rathangan artist Brian O'Loughlin that incorporated a Saint Brigid's Cross. A delegation speaker said, "We are so grateful for the fabulous weekend that we got from everybody," and characterized the visit as the start of "lifelong friendships." The mayor presented an official key to the borough to the visitors as a ceremonial gesture.

A motion to adopt the resolution was made and seconded; the governing body proceeded to a roll-call vote and the mayor declared the resolution adopted. The council also noted receipt of supporting resolutions prepared by the New Jersey Legislature acknowledging the twinning and asked clerks to transmit certified copies to the County Kildare Twinning Liaison Committee.

Why it matters: Twinning agreements are ceremonial but intended to promote cultural, educational and economic exchanges between municipalities. Freehold leaders framed the measure as a way to strengthen international cultural ties and to support the borough's new Bruce Springsteen Story Center, which the resolution says will highlight the musician's local and ancestral history.

The council moved on to its administrator's report and other agenda items; council members and the Rathangan delegation spoke of plans for reciprocal visits and continuing exchanges following the formal adoption of the twinning agreement.
