Albrecht said 229 people participated in the survey and 176 completed responses providing reasoning; about 95% of respondents supported naming the courts for Thomas. The committee considered themes in favor (legacy, mentorship, community contributions) and a small number of opposing comments (concerns about naming facilities for individuals and potential costs).
Albrecht said the expected cost is nominal because renaming would largely involve signage rather than physical changes to the courts; she estimated signage at about $500, subject to bid. She also noted the committee followed board policy 6970 on naming facilities and that the district checks personnel records as part of due diligence. Albrecht confirmed Mr. Thomas passed away last fall and the committee followed the policy preference to allow time to pass before naming.
Next steps: staff will bring a resolution to the board in June for consideration and the naming would be board‑approved before any sign is installed.
