SPLOST update: 2017 collections tallied, 2023 projects outlined including sidewalks and park work

Assistant City Manager for Finance Ken Sakmar briefed the Mayor and Council on final collections for the 2017 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) and on projects anticipated for 2023 SPLOST funding.
Sakmar provided a breakdown of expenditures by category for prior collections: Transportation 46.17%; Recreation Facilities 18.29%; Public Safety 13.97%; Sewer 10.16%; Administrative Facilities 7.65%; Parking Facilities 2.54%; Cultural Facilities 1.22%. He said projects currently funded by earlier SPLOST rounds will continue and that several planned projects are in design or conceptual stages and likely will require 2023 SPLOST funds, citing WP Jones retaining walls, the Bunten Road Park walking trail and pickleball courts, and sewer expansion.
Sakmar noted that if Council chooses to move forward with Phase II of the Main Street sidewalk project, funds must be set aside for a 19% county match or the city could assume full cost should county funds be exhausted.
No formal action was taken at the work session; the update was informational and outlined potential budgetary needs tied to the upcoming 2023 SPLOST.
