Chesterfield County outlines America’s 250th plans, including memorial walkway and tall‑ships viewing

Chesterfield County officials presented a coordinated slate of events and interpretive projects for America’s 250th celebration during a county meeting, unveiling a memorial walkway, a series of living‑history programs and a planned tall‑ships viewing at Dutch Gap.

Kimberly Conley, director of community engagement and resources and co‑chair of the county’s America’s 250th planning committee, said the Chesterfield Barracks Memorial Walkway will be built in the green space on Wagner’s Way near the 1917 historic courthouse and “will feature engraved bricks honoring Revolutionary War soldiers.” She said the plaza will also include a Daughters of the American Revolution historical marker, benches and landscaping, and that the county hopes to unveil the space this fall.

“Each brick will be engraved with the soldiers’ names,” Conley said, and she encouraged residents to learn more and to reserve commemorative bricks through the Chesterfield Historical Society’s website.

Neil Luther, director of Parks and Recreation, said Parks & Recreation and the county history section are developing a short promotional video series and living‑history vignettes to “personalize these stories” and connect county residents to Chesterfield’s Revolutionary War sites. Luther described a proposed interpretive trail that would include the Courthouse Muster site, Rockwood Park, Robius Landing (near the Tuckahoe crossing), Thicke Park (the site tied to the Battle of Sudbury’s Farm) and the North Courthouse Library location.

“We’re trying to take these locations that are of significance and really… highlight for the residents and the community the fact that Chesterfield played a significant role in the Virginia campaign leading up to the Battle of Yorktown,” Luther said.

Luther also said the county is organizing a viewing event at Dutch Gap to coincide with a tall‑ships transit on the James River; he mentioned June 24 as a likely transit date but did not confirm the final schedule and said the county is seeking permissions, including for ceremonial cannon fire. A board member asked how many ships would be involved and whether the ship Godspeed would come; Luther said he believed three ships would transit and that the Godspeed would be at Yorktown instead.

Eppington will continue as a major living‑history venue, Luther said, and the next Eppington event is being planned around 1779 troop movements under the working title “Virginians on the Move,” with a target timeframe of spring 2027 for that iteration. The county also plans “Revolutionary Saturdays,” a series of pop‑up living‑history programs at multiple sites.

Conley highlighted partner organizations—including the Chesterfield Historical Society and the county library—and recapped recent and past programming the committee has hosted, including a Baptist preacher trial reenactment, a 1774 resolves reenactment and last year’s Shot Around the World event at Eppington. She said the circuit court clerk and Judge David Johnson produced a commemorative video about jury duty that the committee will share with the board.

A board member suggested producing video promos with county communications to publicize upcoming events more broadly; Conley and Luther said they would circulate details to the board and partners. No formal votes or funding decisions were recorded during the presentation.
