Caribou County approves 10-year road operating agreement with Agrium

Caribou County commissioners voted Feb. 9 to approve a 10-year Road Operating Agreement with Agrium that places responsibility for road damages on the company when it begins operations at the Lanes Creek Mine next fall. Road and Bridge Supervisor Kim Spencer told the board she and Prosecutor Doug Wood reviewed the agreement and negotiated changes making Agrium responsible for damages.
The agreement was presented to the board during the Feb. 9 meeting. Commissioner Mark Mathews moved to approve the agreement; Commissioner Earl Somsen seconded and the motion passed with both commissioners voting yes.
The agreement is intended to govern county road use tied to Agriums planned activity at Lanes Creek and to clarify contractor responsibility for repairs. County staff said the changes will be reflected in a new printed copy for the commissioners to sign. The board did not specify detailed timelines for execution beyond the anticipated start of Agrium activity next fall.
Next steps: county staff will produce a revised printed agreement for signatures as discussed at the meeting.
