Broken Bow council approves $253,532.30 in bills, fills two board vacancies and OKs temporary street and parking closures

Under new business the council filled two board vacancies. Councilmember Chris Myers moved, and Russ Smith seconded, to appoint Paul Proctor to the Broken Bow Airport Authority for a term ending December 2029; the motion passed on a 4-0 vote. Separately, Luke Wassom moved, and Smith seconded, to appoint Steven Fricke to the Broken Bow Park Board for a term ending February 2026; that motion also carried 4-0.
The council also approved two temporary public-safety measures. Paul Holland moved, and Wassom seconded, to grant temporary authority through Sept. 1, 2024, to Custer County Supervisor Dwain Bryner to close parking spaces on the east side of the Custer County Courthouse (between South D Street and South E Street) “as needed” to protect the public and to facilitate a stair replacement project; the motion passed unanimously. In a separate motion, Smith moved and Holland seconded approval to temporarily close South D Street from South 8th Avenue to South 9th Avenue on July 26, 2024, from about 4:00 p.m. to 11:59 p.m. for the Broken Bow Youth Sports Club Ball Drop Fundraiser and an accompanying beer garden; that motion passed 4-0.
Mayor Rod Sonnichsen offered brief remarks thanking local youth organizers for their work, and Councilmember Russ Smith praised organizers and volunteers, saying, "It means the world to the local youth in our community." Councilmember Paul Holland also thanked the City Streets Department for the condition of parks and fields following a recent softball tournament.
The council adjourned at 6:07 p.m. The meeting minutes are signed and attested by City Clerk Jennifer Waterhouse. No further action or dates for follow-up were announced at the meeting.
