At the May 28 meeting the Public Safety committee reported to the Vinton City Council that members had discussed options to reduce downtown vandalism, including encouraging business owners to install private cameras and the potential installation of city-owned cameras and alley lighting.
"Ted is going to draft a letter to all of the businesses. We're gonna talk to them about each one of them putting one up," the committee reporter said, describing an outreach plan to enlist private monitoring. The report also mentioned considering two city cameras and additional lighting in alleys to deter vandalism and youth trespass.
Council members asked staff to research camera costs and report back; the mayor and staff said they would check pricing with vendors and troubleshoot the city's existing camera system. The council scheduled a June 11 work session for broader discussions, including a planned presentation about police partnerships and mental‑health services.
No formal funding or procurement decisions were made at the May 28 meeting; staff said they will bring cost estimates and vendor proposals for council review.
