Michael Duncan, director of Behavioral Health Services, asked the commissioners to approve a budget amendment to increase the county’s pharmaceutical inventory of long‑acting injectable medications used by behavioral‑health clients, including Vivitrol. Duncan said the county has seen an increased number of clients needing these medications and that costs have risen; he noted there are monthly, three‑month and six‑month formulations (with the six‑month generally the most expensive).
When asked, Duncan confirmed Vivitrol can cost about $1,800 per injection for some formulations and said Medicaid pricing and demand have influenced price trends, which have recently begun to level. He offered that the packet provided to commissioners included a price breakdown by formulation. The item will return for formal action at the March 19 meeting.
