Suffield facilities update: Spaulding School work, high school HVAC mobilization and lighting funding reported

Larry Plano, Suffield's director of facilities, provided a multi-part update on district projects at the May 21 joint meeting of the Permanent Building Commission and Board of Education.
At Spaulding School, Plano said recent flooring work in the high school 400 wing installed over spring break had been well received and that additional flooring products are on order for summer projects; the same contractor who completed prior work will perform additional Spaulding flooring this summer. He reported that bids will be prepared in early June for bathroom renovations, brick repointing and door replacements, with at least one set of staff bathrooms targeted for completion this summer and student bathroom work planned for next summer if needed. Plano also explained contractor screening and building access controls (background checks, temporary badges and controlled access) to minimize disruption while students are present.
Plano updated officials on the high school HVAC project and said commissioning meetings with Salas OBrien and Carrier are scheduled for early June and that mobilization will begin after the school year ends to allow draining systems and crane operations to occur over the summer. He added that state approval for the high school roofing project is pending because a prior project closeout document led the state to classify the roof as newer than it actually is; that discrepancy requires special legislation included in the governor's budget bill to resolve. Despite the delay, consultants said material availability and the limited scope of the replacement area could allow the roofing schedule to be maintained.
Plano also noted that ACCE funding has been approved for the first phase of auditorium lighting improvements, enabling partial work this summer and preparation for later phases as additional funding becomes available.
The commission did not take additional binding action on these maintenance projects at the May 21 meeting; the updates were presented for information and to coordinate scheduling and contractor work.
