The Budget & Finance committee on May 27 voted to forward to the full council a federal earmark of $1,200,000 for bridge repairs, a grant planning staff said was listed on the federal register and coordinated with Congresswoman Lori Trahan's office.
Daniel McCarthy, planning director, told the committee the city had requested larger sums in earlier applications (the project page showed a $2.4 million request and prior work sought $3 million) but the congressionally directed $1.2 million award can be applied to major bridges identified as priorities: the Casey (Central) Bridge and the Daisy Street Bridge. McCarthy said the award came under the highway infrastructure program and that the city will need council acceptance to appropriate and spend the funds.
Council President Giovanni Rodriguez thanked the congresswoman's office and emphasized the importance of the Casey Bridge to local mobility, noting the central crossing carries roughly 23,500 vehicles per day. The committee moved the earmark to the full council with a favorable recommendation; the motion passed by voice vote.
Next steps: The full council will consider acceptance and appropriation procedures; staff said an event to announce the award was being planned.
