Marshall County to pay Enbridge tax settlement, will seek reimbursements and coordinate on Line 3 costs

Marshall County officials met July 14 in Warren and agreed the county will satisfy court-ordered Enbridge tax settlements covering payable years 2013—6 and the 2019 Southern Lights case, then seek reimbursement from the responsible entities, according to the county auditor-treasurer.
Auditor/Treasurer Scott Peters, joined by deputies Leanne Novacek and Sue Peterson, told the board the county is obligated to pay the settlements "as directed by Minnesota Statutes" and that the county will pursue collection from the respective entities through future tax collection disbursements. Peters said a state grant will cover nearly all the county's local portion, and that the state's obligation to the county would be met through 2022 settlements.
The board expressed concern about potential shortfalls beyond the state grant. Commissioners agreed to gather information from other counties to determine any amounts counties may realize in excess of state grant reimbursements and to continue communication with affected counties on all tax settlements.
Board members also discussed ongoing coordination with Enbridge about Line 3 costs, community grants and other identified needs. The meeting record notes the county will maintain both group and individual-county communications with Enbridge on those topics.
Sheriff Jason Boman met separately with the board to outline the sheriff department's role and the potential costs the county might face related to the Enbridge Line 3 project.
The special meeting was called to order by Chairperson Rolland Miller following the Pledge of Allegiance and adjourned at 2:37 p.m.
