Committee members questioned whether the remainder of the building had been inspected for similar damage and urged the applicant to consider targeted inspections of like‑aged building fabric.
Design discussion focused on making the replacement porte‑cochere compatible with the existing building. Committee members asked that the archways on the new portico reflect the same ratio of height to width as the building’s existing arcade arches, that eave and rake detailing be consistent with the rest of the church, and that the horizontal trim band from the covered walkway be continued across the new feature.
Amy Wilson moved approval, stating the project would be categorically exempt under CEQA Section 15301, Class 1, and the committee approved the proposal with the discussed conditions. The motion passed by voice vote 4–0.
Next steps: the applicant will submit final drawings for building‑permit review reflecting the required detailing and the city will include conditions in the permit package. Committee members recommended the church consider further inspections of the remaining vintage portions of the building.
