Jankowski elected Batavia City Council president; Viele chosen president pro tempore

At its organizational meeting on Jan. 12, 2026, the Batavia City Council elected Councilmember Jankowski as Council President and Councilmember Viele as Council President Pro Tempore.
Councilmember Viele nominated Councilmember Jankowski for Council President; the nomination was seconded by Councilmember McGinnis. Councilmember DiSalvo and Councilmember Lord each received one nomination during the open roll-call process. On roll call, Councilmember Jankowski was elected Council President with seven votes; Councilmember Lord received one vote and Councilmember DiSalvo received one vote.
The council then moved to elect a president pro tempore. Councilmember Geib nominated Councilmember Viele, seconded by Councilmember Briggs; there were no other nominations. Councilmember Viele was elected President Pro Tempore by a unanimous roll-call vote of 9-0.
City Clerk Heidi Parker performed a ceremonial swearing-in for Jankowski, DiSalvo and Lord; the minutes note those members had been sworn in prior to the start of the meeting. Councilmember Schmidt led the invocation and the Pledge of Allegiance at the opening of the meeting.
The newly chosen Council President assigned the agenda for the session. The brief organizational meeting adjourned at 7:05 p.m.
