Griffith council approves minutes, claims, wetland credits and a backyard food-truck variance

The Griffith Town Council took several routine and land-use actions at Monday’s meeting, approving prior minutes, settling claims, buying wetland mitigation credits, and granting a zoning variance for a residential food-truck operation.
The council approved the Feb. 17 minutes after a motion and second and then approved claims totaling $571,672.74. No dissent was recorded in the meeting transcript for either action.
On a development matter, Council member Tony Hobson presented the purchase of Calumet Dunes jurisdictional wetland mitigation credits — an in-lieu fee required to offset wetland impacts — saying the bank of credits was low and the town needs them for a potential Avenue H expansion. The in-lieu fee for the acreage the town expects to need is $173,850; the council moved, seconded and approved the purchase.
The council also received and adopted findings of fact from the Griffith Board of Zoning Appeals regarding petitioner Tamika Blackman’s request to operate a food truck business and park a 14-foot food trailer at 401 West 44th Place in an R-1 residential district. Mr. Balow summarized the BZA recommendation and listed conditions the BZA attached: no on-site customer activity, all food prepared and stored off-site, no deliveries to the residence, no signage or advertising at the residence, and the trailer stored behind a fence. Council moved to grant the variance on those conditions and the motion carried.
