North Greenbush board approves routine resolutions, schedules referendum on term lengths

At its June 13 meeting the Town Board appointed four police officers, approved insurance and personnel actions, adopted a local land-use amendment, scheduled a public hearing and referendum to extend select elective terms, and approved a contested ZBA appointment 3–1.
The Town Board of North Greenbush conducted a series of routine and policy actions at its June 13 meeting, including personnel appointments, insurance approvals, infrastructure spending and a vote to schedule a public hearing that will lead to a referendum on lengthening several town elective terms.
Early in the meeting the board approved four police appointments by separate resolutions (2024-06-53 through 2024-06-56); each motion passed unanimously. The board also approved Police and Firemen’s insurance (described by Comptroller Michael Chaires as Aflac insurance) under Resolution 2024-06-51.
Supervisor Bott moved and the board approved scheduling a public hearing to consider a local law increasing the terms of the Supervisor, Town Clerk and Superintendent of Highways from two to four years (Resolution 2024-06-52). Town Attorney Fred Kirwin explained the process: the board follows a first-resolution step, then adoption of a local law, and a mandatory referendum on Election Day; each position would be presented as a separate referendum question.
Other votes included an agreement with the Tri City Valley Cats and the North Greenbush Police Benevolent Association (Resolution 2024-06-57), appointment of summer and beach staff for 2024 (Resolution 2024-06-58; Supervisor Bott recused from that vote), salary adjustments for utilities laborers (Resolution 2024-06-59), adoption of Local Law No. 3 of 2024 amending the Tech Valley Residential Community Planned Development District (Resolution 2024-06-60), appointment of a full-time laborer (Resolution 2024-06-61), and approval of a geo-technical remediation plan for 1101/1102 Giovanna explained by Town Engineer Eric Westfall (Resolution 2024-06-62). The board also approved expenditures for engineering services and installation of pressure relief valves (Resolution 2024-06-63).
Supervisor Bott made a motion to appoint a candidate to the Zoning Board of Appeals (Resolution 2024-06-65); Councilwoman Hoffman recused and left the room and Councilwoman Sabo opposed the nominee, citing a preference for land-use experience. The remaining members approved the appointment, 3–1.
A resident, Bill Stewart of Brianna Blvd., used the public comment period to ask the board to ensure building permits continue to comply with town codes; Supervisor Bott confirmed that permits must follow all town codes. The board also approved meeting minutes for May 9, 2024, with Councilwoman Merola recorded as abstaining. The meeting adjourned at 8:11 p.m.
