Chair opens Webster Groves business district advisory meeting; members approve item and review events, roadworks
Summary
The Webster Groves Special Business District Advisory Commission opened its May meeting, approved an early agenda item by voice vote, and heard updates on a June street dance, a June 5–7 art fair and multi-month county roadwork on Big Bend and Elm that will affect traffic and parking.
The Chair called the May meeting of the Webster Groves Special Business District Advisory Commission to order and noted there were no visitors present. A motion to approve the referenced agenda item was raised (moved by Frank and seconded by Ron) and approved by voice vote with no opposition recorded.
The commission discussed several recurring items under old business. Committee members reported they have not yet secured contact with the electric company about rooftop lighting and said pedestrian and parking sign installations are still awaiting the next meeting or county action. One member advised that city-issued checks are produced in the city office and suggested speaking with Gregory Donovan to follow up on payments.
Members spent substantial time on event planning. The Chair said “Planning continues to go well” for the June 20 street dance and confirmed primary sponsorship from James Carlton/State Farm; city staff and police participated in a recent planning meeting to discuss officer coverage, trash and signage. The commission also reviewed the calendar of summer and fall events, including an art fair June 5–7 at Eden Seminary presented by Webster Arts, gazebo concerts beginning Aug. 21 (Fridays, 7:00–8:30 p.m.), a jazz festival in September and holiday open houses in November and December.
Transportation projects were a major topic. A presenter described phased county work on Big Bend, from Lockwood west to Laclede Station, saying crews will mill the existing surface, reshape sections, repair sidewalks and restripe the roadway; the presenter estimated the project could last “at least 100 days” depending on weather. Members also learned Elm at Kirkham will be closed for a culvert replacement for approximately five to six months; Saint Louis County must approve detour plans and members noted the route serves heavy traffic volumes.
Chair noted Council member Smith and Scott (city staff) were not present, so there was no formal council update. The commission scheduled its next meeting for June 23 at 8:00 a.m. and adjourned.
The meeting included routine updates and coordination items; no new formal ordinances or contracts were acted on other than the approved agenda item.
