Simonton Lake board accepts invoices, deposits $75,000 of county special-assessment payment

The Simonton Lake Conservancy District board approved routine business at its July 10 meeting and set aside most of a recent special-assessment payment for short-term savings.

At the start of the meeting the board recorded attendance and accepted the June 12 minutes after a motion by Ed Hickman and second from Mark Lucas; the motion passed, 4-0. The board then approved invoices, including sewer expenses of $26,982.37 and special-assessment expenses of $351.20, on a motion by Ryan Matherly that passed, 4-0.

Linda Wilson told the board she received a $75,832.79 check from Elkhart County representing special-assessment receipts. The board agreed to place $75,000 into a certificate of deposit; Linda will contact members to determine the CD term.

Board President Bob Evans reported speaking with the SBOA about how special-assessment funds may be used. The SBOA directed the board to its website and advised submitting project plans for review before spending funds. Evans said one option would be to retain Dave Hollenbeck to approach the SBOA on the district’s behalf to clarify allowable expenditures. No formal procurement action for Hollenbeck was recorded at the meeting.

The board also heard from homeowner Paul Wilson about whether board members were covered by district insurance; Wilson delivered paperwork to Evans and Linda Wilson was asked to check whether Ben Levitt at Salem Insurance could attend the next meeting.

Procedural business concluded with a motion by Ryan Matherly, seconded by Ed Hickman, to adjourn at 8:30 p.m.; the motion passed 4-0. The district’s next meeting is scheduled for Aug. 14, 2024.
