Woburn introduces new fine and performing arts coordinator

WOBURN — The School Committee welcomed Ellen Mullane as Woburn Public Schools’ new fine and performing arts coordinator and heard her vision for expanding arts instruction districtwide.
Mullane described herself as a painter and longtime educator with a recent doctorate in culturally responsive teaching. "The arts are just the perfect remedy" for social-emotional challenges, she said, adding that having dedicated spaces and full-time specialists for art and music gives students opportunities to succeed beyond traditional academics.
Committee members asked about rotating student artwork and space constraints; Mullane said she will follow up with the committee on plans and invited further conversation about how to create supportive arts spaces in schools. The committee also approved a procedural motion to redact personal information on resumes submitted for district hiring.
What’s next: Mullane will meet with staff and stakeholders to develop an arts plan and coordinate with district curriculum and scheduling efforts.
