Lowndes County approves $5 million design‑build amendment to start new animal shelter

Mr. McLeod, a county staff member, told the board the design‑build contract with Kellerman Construction is complete and that the total project budget presented is $5,000,000, including a contingency of $32,880. He said the firm has finished design and bidding work and staff recommended approval of Amendment/Exhibit B so construction can start.
“The design build contract with Kellerman Construction was approved in December. They have finished the design of the project as well as all the bidding processes. They have presented a total budget of 5,000,000 with the schedule of values with the 32,880 in contingency,” Mr. McLeod said.
Commissioners asked about schedule and size. Mr. McLeod said work is expected to start mid‑to‑late June, with roughly 12 months of construction followed by two to three months for transition and demolition of the existing facility — about 13 months in total — and that the building footprint is about 15,360 square feet.
A commissioner (speaker 6) moved to approve the design‑build agreement (Exhibit B) and authorize the chairman to sign; the motion carried with no opposition recorded. The chairman congratulated staff and commissioners on moving the project forward.
