At its Feb. 2 meeting the Ottawa Arts Committee discussed several internal and community-facing initiatives: outstanding artist payments, a new committee member, plans for a poet laureate and exploratory community projects.
Tami Koppen reported that some Nutcrackers artists and multiple Morel artists have not yet been paid; Koppen said she will reach out to facilitate payment. The committee introduced DeAnna Carlson as a new member.
The committee noted that City Council is scheduled to vote Feb. 3 to confirm Rene Parks as the city’s poet laureate; members discussed pursuing arts grants to fund printing of the laureate’s collected work and exploring a program to place poems in local businesses.
Committee members also agreed to continue exploring custom signage for the Little Free Art Gallery and discussed a community-build idea for crocheted coverings that Annette Barr had researched, including pop-up arches to display work and basic materials/pricing for beginner hooks.
Next steps: Koppen will contact unpaid artists to resolve payments; staff will pursue grant options for printing projected poet-laureate materials and will continue outreach on the Little Free Art Gallery signage and the community-build plan for crocheted installations.
