Police marine unit: derelict vessel removal approved; state vessel turn-in program explained

Marco Island police marine-unit staff reported that a derelict vessel in Goodland Bay has been approved for state-funded removal and should be removed within roughly 40 days.
"We just got a grant approval from the state, so that'll be removed within the next 40 days or so," said Josh Farris of the police marine unit. Farris also described the state's VTIP (vessel turn-in program), which allows boat owners who cannot maintain or afford a boat to surrender it to the program; the state then salvages and disposes of the vessel at no cost to the owner.
Farris said the city currently has the one derelict vessel in its jurisdiction and that two additional VTIP boats have been out for bid in Goodland. He encouraged residents and community partners to share information about the VTIP program and noted the marine unit would assist owners with the application process when appropriate.
Farris also noted internal changes to improve coordination with code enforcement, training of a code-compliance officer for waterway work, and that the unit will put a SeaKeeper tracker on a vessel when it becomes available to improve coverage and monitoring.
