Mohollen estimated about 10 eligible volunteers per fire company and a rough local cost of $10,000 if implemented. Commissioner Earl E. Swavely seconded the motion and the board approved it unanimously, 5-0.
Manager Edward C. Wagner and other commissioners praised the volunteer companies’ service; Mohollen highlighted the volume of calls for both fire companies in 2024 despite having no structural fires that year.
The vote authorizes the solicitor to draft an ordinance for future consideration; the Board did not adopt the ordinance on Feb. 3 and did not specify an implementation date or precise eligibility criteria during the meeting.
Next steps will include drafting the ordinance language, establishing eligibility and point calculations, and returning to the Board for formal introduction and a vote.
