The Henderson Board of Mayor and Aldermen approved acceptance of a Tennessee Volunteer Fire Equipment Grant for $29,650 to purchase two self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) air packs and two sets of turn-out gear for the city fire department. Fire Chief Doug Acred said he applied for $188,000 and the department was awarded $29,650 with no local match; Alderman Donna R. Butler moved to accept the grant and the motion carried.
Chief Acred updated the board on recent emergency responses, including an 18-wheeler rollover with a hazmat component outside the city and a roof HVAC fire at Chester County Junior High School that affected the sixth-grade hallway. He also proposed a firefighter award and recognition program similar to police life-saving recognitions, reported a delivery delay for the new Engine 3 while a scratch is repaired, and asked the board to consider donating the old Engine 3 to the county, which had a unit go down.
Police Chief Gary Davidson reported results of a Jan. 17 undercover alcohol sting that used an underage officer at seven local businesses; Chief Davidson said one business sold alcohol to the underage buyer. City Attorney Jerry Spore told the board that because the sale was at a liquor store, the Tennessee Alcoholic Beverage Commission is the agency that issues penalties; minutes identify Oden’s Liquor Store in connection with the incident.
What happens next: the fire department will proceed with the SCBA and turnout gear purchase using the grant; staff and the city attorney will await any Alcoholic Beverage Commission action related to the undercover sting.
