Town attorney announces foreclosure auction schedule; staff explain starting bids and occupied properties

Staff explained that the auction’s starting bid will be the taxes owed; an additional 8% fee will be added to cover auction costs. They said occupied properties remain civil matters between parties and that the town will collect the full sale amount before distribution; the town cautioned that outstanding mortgages or liens are not the town’s responsibility to resolve for the buyer.
The town attorney suggested the possibility of a separate, non-foreclosure town-property auction in September or October and said the next foreclosure-by-statute auction would likely be held in December under current timing rules. Board members asked whether proceeds would recover the full $30 million the town has previously reported as outstanding property taxes; staff said the town expects to recover a portion but not the full amount given statutory and practical limits.
No vote was taken; the announcement was a staff update and scheduling notice for the public and prospective bidders.
