Jamison Robinett, president of Cedar City Hospital, told the Iron County Commission on May 11 that the hospital’s mission is "Helping people live the healthiest lives possible" and outlined the statutory standards the state requires to qualify for a charitable property-tax exemption. Robinett said the hospital reported $657,749 in community benefit for 2025 and $9,668,332 in charity care, and cited recent capital investments including an emergency-department expansion and a new PET scanner. "We help meet the diverse healthcare needs of the community by providing excellent care at the lowest appropriate cost, regardless of the patient's ability to pay," Robinett said.
Jordan Merrill, representing the hospital, summarized results from a recent Community Health Needs Assessment and described outreach and service lines that hospital leaders say support the charitable-exemption case. The presentation was informational; the commission did not take an immediate vote on the hospital’s exemption at the meeting.
The hospital cited six statutory criteria under Utah law for charitable-exemption eligibility: provision of financial assistance and hospital care; nonprofit earnings and gift-use restrictions; nondiscriminatory open access and financial-assistance policies; a diverse governing board and annual engagement with county officials; demonstrating that total gifts to the community exceed property-tax liability; and efficient use of administrative resources to advance the mission. Hospital representatives said documentation to support those points would be available to county staff for review.
