Sparta to raise municipal court fees and revise solid-waste service charges

Tanya explained an ordinance amending Sparta Municipal Code Title 3, Chapter 1, Section 1051 to increase municipal court-related charges. She said state-set components — litigation, state tax and the $50 fine — cannot be changed locally but that training, technology and courtroom-security fees will rise so the total local burden will be roughly $50 (local components combined). "The court calls have went upness ... just upkeeping our software which that cost keeps going up and labor and everything else," Tanya said when explaining the first reading.
On solid-waste fees, staff said county landfill changes have increased wear-and-tear, fuel and equipment costs for the city’s collection fleet, and presented an ordinance amending Title 17, Chapter 2 to revise service fees effective Aug. 1, 2024. The ordinance passed first reading.
Why it matters: The fee changes are intended to cover rising operating costs and keep municipal services solvent; the court-fee changes were presented as limited to local components not controlled by state law.
What’s next: The court-cost ordinance was introduced on first reading; the solid-waste fee ordinance passed first reading and will return for further consideration per the city’s ordinance schedule.
