Resident reports being followed downtown; commissioners press police for follow‑up

During public comment on July 14, resident Mindy Hill described being accosted and followed to the post office with her daughter and said the officer she spoke to had been unable to tie an out‑of‑state, unregistered tag to the vehicle. Hill said she was told the city could not do more unless the other state provided information and that downtown surveillance cameras were not functioning because of construction.
"I have been told that there's nothing she can do if he's out of state unless Indiana calls her back. I'm not accepting that," Hill said, and asked the mayor and staff to address the incident properly so other children are not endangered.
Commissioners and city staff acknowledged the concern and asked to meet with Hill to review the information she has; one commissioner said he would follow up with Police Chief Harvey and city manager McGee to see what additional investigative steps can be taken. The mayor and commissioners emphasized that such incidents are unacceptable and said they would look into whether more can be done given the out‑of‑state tag and surveillance limitations.
Next steps: staff and police will follow up with the resident, attempt to gather additional evidence and report back to the commission on any possible avenues for further investigation.
