District details summer school sites and free meals for enrolled students

The South Colonie Central School District on May 26 laid out detailed plans for summer academic and enrichment programming and said it will provide free breakfast and lunch to students enrolled in those programs.
Superintendent Dr. Perry told the board the district will run four summer-school programs and an extended school year (ESY) program and that programming sites were adjusted because two buildings will be closed for construction. "Veer and S Creek will be closed for the summer," Dr. Perry said, and programming will be shifted to other middle and elementary buildings. "All students enrolled in our summer programming will be able to obtain breakfast and lunch at no charge," he added.

Dr. Perry gave meal-service details: breakfast will be served from 7:15 to 8:15 a.m. and lunch roughly 10:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. from July 8 through Aug. 19 at the listed summer sites; extended-school-year meals will be provided at Forest Park and summer-academy snacks will be available for younger students.
On eligibility, Dr. Perry clarified that meal service is limited to students registered in district summer programs and is not an open community feeding site as it was in a prior year. "They have to be registered," he said, noting the district will work to register families who need meals but that the programs are for South Colonie students enrolled in summer offerings.
The board did not take a separate vote on the summer-program details; the update was provided as a report for information. The meeting moved on to routine personnel and agenda items after questions about staffing and logistics.
