Logan told the board Summer Discovery began with 75 children enrolled and a strong volunteer presence for opening-day activities. He said the program faced a potential shortfall when Chartwells, the school-food vendor that traditionally provides lunches, informed staff they could not provide meals this year.
Logan said he submitted the usual annual request to donor Reed for the program’s $30,000 contribution; after brief uncertainty, Reed’s board approved $10,000 specifically to cover lunches. Farmers Mutual Insurance also delivered a check to support summer snacks. Chartwells will prepare and provide the lunches but will bill the parks department at cost as arranged.
Board members thanked Reed and Farmers Mutual for stepping in. Logan said the department will continue to monitor lunch-service logistics and thanked volunteers who helped prepare fields and facilities for opening day.
