Commission hears low John Parsons balance, Gateway Parkette timeline and utility‑box mural progress

At its meeting, the Redondo Beach Cultural Arts Commission received a liaison update on current public-art projects and the status of the John Parsons Public Art Fund.
Jack, the commission liaison, said the fund’s adjusted balance is currently low (staff estimated roughly $8,000–$10,000 after assuming $39,000 in unexpended mural money was returned) but finance projections indicate future deposits from development-triggered 1% allocations. Because some project money is expected later in the year, staff cautioned against committing the fund for new allocations immediately.
On project status, Jack reported that two of five approved utility-box art wraps have artist fees paid and that installation quotes for manufacturing were just under $11,000; one previously installed wrap at a fire station was removed for maintenance and will need reapplication. The Gateway Parkette 'wave' sculpture has advanced to engineering drawings necessary for building permits; fabrication and shipping delays pushed the completion timeline into mid–late September 2026 and project costs rose from an original $75,000 estimate to approximately $275,000 due to materials and shipping.
Commissioners were briefed that council expanded the scope of an LGBTQ art commission to include all art forms and broader location options; the Esplanade contract is near approval and installations are expected to take several months following contractor fabrication. Staff committed to provide the commission with the shortlisted art proposals and installation schedules.
The commission received and filed the liaison report with a motion approved on the consent calendar.
