Riverhead board threatens condemnation after Long Island Science Center fails to appear and project stalls

Board members raised multiple concerns about the Main Street building: alleged facade separation and foundation cracks, mold and vermin infestations, sewage and flood issues at the rear, and a reported mechanics’ lien for unpaid work. The board said the property has been inactive since its 2019 purchase by the owner the board named on the record.
"We relied on those representations," a board member said, describing earlier assurances that the center would be an activation for the town square. "A year later and still no action, just talk," the member added, calling the property a public-safety and economic concern.
Councilwoman Maryfield moved to proceed with demolition/condemnation procedures; another board member seconded the motion during the work session. Board members discussed giving the owner a final opportunity to present plans at the next work session, but several said they would vote to proceed with condemnation if no substantial response is provided.
Why it matters: The science center was envisioned as an anchor for the town-square revitalization; board members said the lack of activity threatens the town-square activation timeline and could force the town to rip up newly installed pavers and rework drainage if the property is redeveloped later, imposing additional taxpayer cost.
