North Augusta to begin mosquito spraying; city says product is essential-oil based and residents can opt out

Public Service Director James Sutton said North Augusta will begin mosquito spraying for certain neighborhoods starting Wednesday, June 2, with applications scheduled between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m.
Sutton told the council the product the city will use this season is "not regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency. It's made of essential oils. It's got cedar, rosemary, lemongrass, and some other friendly products mixed with it." He said the treatment is intended to be less harmful to pollinators than past products and that the city has used similar formulations in coordination with other government agencies.
The city will spray weekly through Oct. 28, and residents who do not want their property treated can request an exclusion by filling out a form on the city's property maintenance webpage, Sutton said. He added that the program has a sizable number of residents asking for additional spraying.
Council members asked staff to post notice on the city's social media channels and to provide information about pollinator safety; Sutton said staff will upload the public notice first thing in the morning.
The announcement was made as part of routine department reports at a special-call study session; the item will not be voted on that night. The city website contains the exclusion form and schedule details for residents seeking more information.
