Palm Beach County School Board proclaims May observances, then moves to executive session

The School Board of Palm Beach County voted unanimously May 27 to adopt a series of proclamations honoring public-safety and cultural observances and then left the boardroom for a closed-door executive session on expulsions.
Virginia Savietto, School Board member for District 2, opened the proclamations with a declaration naming May 2026 Drowning Prevention Awareness Month. "Drowning prevention is not just about awareness or statistics; it's about loss and the importance of doing everything we can to prevent it," Savietto said, recounting the death of a cousin in a childhood pool accident to underline the urgency of prevention measures. The proclamation notes that 393 local water-safety activities reached more than 31,000 Palm Beach County residents and calls for community action, swim lessons, supervision and pool barriers to reduce preventable drownings.
Edwin Ferguson, School Board member for District 7, read a proclamation recognizing May 2026 as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, citing AAPI contributions to the county and country and urging recognition of the community's history. The board also read and adopted a proclamation marking May as Haitian Heritage Month, highlighting Haitian Flag Day and the cultural contributions of Haitian residents in Palm Beach County.
The board approved a motion to proclaim May 2026 as Internal Audit Awareness Month. Marcia Andrews, School Board member for District 6, read a proclamation recognizing Friday, June 19, 2026 as Juneteenth and urged residents to confront the nation's past injustices and work toward equity.
All motions to adopt the proclamations carried unanimously. After approving the agenda and consent items as presented, the board recessed the public meeting and entered a closed-door executive session expected to last approximately one hour to consider expulsions. The board recorded that all seven members were present for the session.
The board provided logistical information at the start of the meeting that the session was being broadcast on Comcast channels 234 and 235, U-verse channel 99 and via a YouTube link, and that full recordings would be posted to the district website within 24 hours.
