Hidden Falls Big Hill work nears finish as county readies trails for public opening

Placer County planners told the Parks and Open Spaces Commission that construction at the Hidden Falls Big Hill expansion is in its final stages and that trail work continues. Kyle Smith said phase one — including a parking area, restroom facilities and septic/water infrastructure — has had preliminary inspections and staff expect final inspections within weeks before finishing minor touch-ups.
Trail work continues on the Blue Oak Legacy Way mobility trail and an additional three miles of native-surface two-track trail remain before the area could open. "We are hoping to open the Big Hill expansion area to the public this calendar year," Smith said, and commissioners were told they will be invited to ribbon-cutting and trail-walk events as dates are set.
Staff also noted other site-specific items: Meadow Vista’s shade structure is fabricated and scheduled for delivery this spring or early summer; Sheridan Park design and bid documents are being completed with the goal of beginning construction early next year; and partners have scheduled community milestone events — Martis Valley Trail segment 3F ribbon cutting on June 3 and the Colfax Skate Park groundbreaking on June 8.
Why it matters: Hidden Falls and other regional trail investments are expensive and serve broad user groups countywide; getting infrastructure online sooner can increase public access and support regional recreation goals.
Next steps: Staff will complete final inspections at Hidden Falls, continue trail construction with coordination from maintenance teams, and announce public-opening events when schedules are confirmed.
