Clifton Park advances draft agricultural and farmland protection plan and sets public hearing

The Town of Clifton Park board accepted a draft Agricultural and Farmland Protection Plan and authorized the SEQR (State Environmental Quality Review) steps necessary before holding a public hearing, town staff said.

John, a staff member, told the board the plan will be treated as a Type I action and will go through the required lead-agency declaration, long environmental assessment form and public-hearing process under the SEQR framework. "We're looking to have this agriculture and farmland protection plan become part of the town's comprehensive plan upon adoption," John said.

The staff presentation noted the committee held public forums last year and compiled mapping and analysis intended to identify and protect agricultural soils and resources. John said the town will refer the matter to the Saratoga County Planning Board under General Municipal Law Section 239-m and will advertise the hearing at least 10 days in advance and post a draft on the town's farmland website and a hard copy at the town clerk's office for public review.

Why it matters: Town officials said adopting the plan into the comprehensive plan could trigger zoning and code reviews to ensure future land-use decisions align with farmland-protection goals.
