Staff presented early Safe Routes to School concepts for schools near Butler and Fox Glenn and invited committee feedback while designs are still at a formative stage.
Designers noted steep grades in parts of the corridor that constrain crossing locations and ramp grades (engineering standards limit many stop‑controlled crossings because of slopes approaching 5%). The group discussed tradeoffs between one‑way and two‑way bikeways where students travel, with several members preferring two‑way or wider shared facilities because students and parents frequently take informal, shortcut routes.
A participant described witnessing a child struck near Maverick on Butler, underscoring the urgency of practical crossing locations and clearer, shorter walking routes to school. Members stressed the need for formalized crossings, mid‑block refuges where feasible, and coordination with school administration for student and parent outreach. Staff said they are meeting with school administrators on June 1 to present concepts and will bring revised plans back for committee input.
The committee also discussed other neighborhood ideas—roundabouts, diverters, and narrowing wide streets—to reduce vehicle speeds and create safer walking and biking environments for students. Staff emphasized that some proposed treatments are early concepts and may be added to longer‑range neighborhood planning work rather than constructed immediately.
Next steps: staff will continue outreach with schools and return with refined concepts in July that the committee can formally comment on.
