Parent and resident press board on special‑education placement, athletic‑eligibility rule

Two public commenters used the board meeting to press district officials on special‑education placement decisions and athletic‑eligibility rules.

Jessica Balden spoke during public comment about a proposed move that would place her 8‑year‑old daughter (who has epilepsy) from Crescent to Cranberry. She said the change would increase travel time and medical risk, and asked for IEP team members, speech staff and teachers to attend an upcoming meeting: "we're afraid of her regressing... she has epilepsy and that's 20 minutes away from us and we have no way of getting to her and to the hospital in that amount of time," Balden said. She said the family wants assurances the placement will meet both academic and medical needs.

A separate resident who identified himself in the record as Mr. Sip Lady pressed trustees on a policy (referred to in the meeting as E7A) that requires elementary students to be enrolled full time at a school to participate in athletics. He asked five specific questions about why the board had not changed a policy the resident described as "flawed" and requested written responses from each board member explaining the continued justification for the rule.

Board members acknowledged the concerns and said staff and the board would review placement and policy questions. Several trustees asked for written responses to the resident's questions and for a substantive reply to the parent's IEP‑related concerns; the transcript records the public comments and board acknowledgement but does not show a formal board decision on either matter during the meeting.
