At its May 26 meeting the Willows City Council held a public hearing on weed abatement and adopted a resolution confirming the declaration of public nuisances for properties that did not comply with city weed‑abatement notices.
Fire Chief Nathan Mug explained the process used to notify property owners: staff makes an initial survey and issues notices (the chief said roughly 700 notices were sent this cycle), then follows up before scheduling contractor abatement for properties that remain out of compliance. Chief Mug told the council that in a typical year the city ultimately abates about 20–40 properties.
No members of the public came forward to protest at the hearing; the council voted to adopt a resolution confirming the nuisance declarations and ordering abatement to begin June 1, 2026 if parcels are not self‑abated. The motion passed by unanimous voice vote. Chief Mug indicated the city coordinates appliance pickup and that the June 6 community cleanup may be used to collect larger items prior to contractor action.
The resolution directs the city’s contractor to proceed with abatement on the schedule in the resolution unless property owners cure conditions themselves prior to the start date.
