Robert Lancet, a West Sleepy Hollow Road resident, urged the Essex community advisory board to consider automatic traffic law‑enforcement cameras to improve road safety. Lancet said such systems “capture the vehicles committing the violation, not include the driver of the photo,” and described a pilot program run elsewhere that he said limits stored images and shares photos with police rather than keeping driver images on file.
Lancet told the board he had contacted local legislative representatives and a state senator to ask about bringing the program to Essex, and he cited media reporting on the issue. He also said that large fulfillment operations and app‑based delivery traffic can concentrate many delivery vehicles in a small area, which he worried would increase local safety risks.
Board chair Gwen Lyn acknowledged the concern and said she would follow the issue as it moves through the legislature. Other members noted the state has run pilots for work‑zone enforcement on interstates and that Burlington has considered similar tools because of limited staffing for continuous monitoring.
The resident said first‑time offenders in some programs typically receive warnings, with escalating penalties for repeat violations. The board did not take action at the meeting; members said they would track any relevant bills and report back if it becomes feasible to pursue a local pilot.
Next steps: the board agreed to monitor legislative activity and any pilot evaluations before considering a formal recommendation or local implementation.
