Library advisory committee to focus on grants, budgets and capital projects; staff to stop routine branch updates

The Laredo Library Advisory Committee on May 27 agreed to refocus its role toward "big-picture" advisory work and away from routine branch operations, staff said.
"What I will be doing is providing you with grants, budgets, capital improvement projects, big picture as we are advisory and recommendations for policies moving forward," the Chair said, explaining that branch updates will be handled by operations staff going forward.
Committee members said they want a written clarification of responsibilities. One member asked that staff return next month with the committee's role spelled out so members can see which items fall under the advisory function and which are operational matters.
Staff also highlighted the city's budget cycle and urged members to raise any capital or budget recommendations now so they can be considered for the October budget. "Ostensibly the city's budget runs October to October. So now's a good time to have these discussions," a member said.
At the meeting staff announced two awarded grants that will be presented to the Laredo City Council in July: the American Conversations Project, described as facilitated community conversations, and a Summer at the Library media-literacy program focused on artificial intelligence. Staff stated the grants include amounts of $500 and $2,500. The Chair said both awards will be brought to council for confirmation.
The committee approved the April 29 minutes earlier in the meeting. The minutes were accepted after a motion and second; the Chair called the vote and said the motion passed.
Next steps: staff will provide a written summary of the committee's responsibilities at the next meeting and will forward the two grants to city council for formal acknowledgment and any required approvals.
