Chief reports June response totals, new recruits and retirements at Eastchester fire board meeting

The chief said the department responded to 307 alarm incidents in June 2024, of which seven were fire-related and 148 were EMS or rescue responses. He said mutual aid was both received and provided once during the month, and described one canceled mutual-aid response to a smoky apartment condition when all units were committed on scene.
On staffing, Chief Tween announced three probationary firefighters from the Westchester Career Academy — named in the record as Stephano Gizo, Eva Russo and Steven Lawler — will graduate July 19 at Westchester Community College and report for duty at the firehouse Monday, July 22. He said the new hires will work one to two weeks on day tours before assignment to 24‑hour engine tours with a lieutenant for several months.
The chief also reported several operational items: in‑house vehicle and equipment maintenance performed by part‑time mechanic Hank Heninger, a new Tower Ladder 17 expected to go into service in a week or two at the North End firehouse, and that mechanic and fire prevention reports for June had been emailed to the board on July 5.
Chief Tween recognized long service and retirements, offering praise for Captain Bruce Calby, appointed Feb. 24, 1996, and Firefighter Billy Wigman, whose combined volunteer and career service exceeds 37 years; both retirements became effective June 29, 2024. “I would like to offer my congratulations to Captain Bruce Calby on his retirement,” the chief said, and extended similar thanks to Wigman for his years of service and ongoing role in EMT training.
The secretary later updated the board on outreach and records-management planning, including ongoing work to transfer the department’s domain/email to EastchesterFD.gov and preliminary planning to relocate records if Station 3 is renovated.
Next steps: the new recruits will report July 22; the chief and mechanics will manage equipment commissioning and locker installation once procurement completes.
