Radford City Schools honors retirees, student Model General Assembly participants and teacher award winners

At its May meeting the Radford City School Board recognized long-serving staff, celebrated student achievements and accepted awards for local teachers.
Cole Wilder led retiree recognitions for Miss Michelle Saunders, who built the Radford elementary art program beginning in 1984 through a grant-funded initiative and later served across multiple schools, and Joy Webb, described as the "steady hand" at Bell Heath's office. Staff and the audience applauded their service.
The board also honored Amy Ramsey for 28 years overseeing Chromebook inventory and technology support; speakers credited her quick repairs and organization during the district's one-to-one device rollout.
Carol Andrews presented a Model General Assembly (MGA) showcase: 14 students attended the 79th MGA in Richmond and described learning to write bills, follow parliamentary procedure and debate. Student speakers said MGA improved their public speaking and civic understanding.
Dr. Jack Hayes of the American Revolution Institute presented the Society of the Cincinnati's teacher of the year award to John Ferguson of Radford High School and handed a $2,500 check. Later the board announced Ferguson also earned the Virginia History Day teaching excellence award.
The meeting noted History Day achievements: a Radford High group placed third in the state group exhibit category (the first time a Radford group placed at state), and individual and group projects on the USO, the 1960 Nixon-Kennedy debate and women's suffrage received commendations.
The board's recognitions highlighted cross-curricular projects, community partnerships (Baron Entertainment) and student civic engagement. No formal board action was required for the recognitions.
The board moved on to regular business after the celebration portion of the agenda.
