Haywood County Schools honors student writers, scholars and athletes; Flora Webb Trust praised for $155,000 gift

The Haywood County Board of Education used part of its meeting to recognize student achievements across the district, honoring middle-school writers, elementary STEM teams, scholarship recipients and championship athletes.
Staff introduced winners of a Young Writers 100‑word story challenge and called several student authors by name. Elementary schools were acknowledged for a drone obstacle-course event in which team times ranged as low as 3 minutes, 12 seconds; staff identified top teams and thanked coaches who helped prepare students.
The board also recognized Cooper Crook as the district nominee to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction for the U.S. Presidential Scholars program. Several seniors were listed as recipients of competitive scholarship programs and university nominations, including students tied to Goodnight Scholars/Teaching Fellows, Carolina Covenant and other named programs.
Philanthropy and athletics
Board members publicly thanked the Flora Webb Trust of Maple Grove United Methodist Church for contributing more than $155,000 to the Haywood County Schools Foundation. According to the presentation, the trust’s gifts have supported the district’s books-at-home summer program, renewal scholarships for graduating seniors, elementary school supplies and the high school farm project.
The meeting also highlighted athletic achievements: conference champions in track and field, top performances in triple jump and shot put, and district champions in trap/rifle/archery competition. Coaches and presenters praised athletes’ dedication; one coach recited individual results and emphasized character and consistent attendance.
New principal introduced
Board members introduced a new Hazlewood Elementary principal (referred to at the meeting as "Miss Mandy"). In her remarks the principal said she was deeply grateful to return to Haywood County Schools and pledged to "put students' needs first" as she begins the role.
The board closed the recognitions portion by inviting the community to district events including upcoming graduation ceremonies and the district’s books-on-break summer programming.
