Blount County school board approves facility upgrades, budget moves and rezoning

The board also accepted a Tennessee tutoring grant of $74,600 to be recorded in fund 141, and approved a $725,000 transfer within fund 141 moving funds from contracts with private agencies and educational assistance to contracts with vehicle owners.
The board approved a $46,078 change order for roof replacement work at Heritage Middle School (fund 177) and awarded a $183,400 bid and budget increase for roof replacement and brick‑veneer repair at Friendsville Elementary (fund 177). Members then amended and approved a tracks renovation contract for William Blount High School and Heritage High School, adjusting the total to $1,768,772 so both sites could be renovated during summer break.
Director/Superintendent Ridge explained the logic behind a separate rezoning motion, telling board members the change shifts a new apartment complex near North Greyridge/Union Grove Road from the Friendsville attendance zone into Union Grove Elementary so future residents will know which school their children will attend. “We wanted them to be able to know where their kids are zoned to go to elementary school if they were to live there,” Director Ridge said.
Board members took those votes by roll call when requested; the meeting record shows no recorded opposition on the items considered. The actions were presented as routine agenda items and advanced the district’s near‑term facilities and budget plans.
What’s next: contracts and budget adjustments approved tonight will be implemented by district staff; the board’s agenda notes the district aims to complete the track renovations during the summer break so fields and tracks are available for the fall season.
