Trustee Justin Jackson sworn in as Moreno Valley Unified board member; state superintendent presents proclamation

Trustee Justin Jackson took the oath of office at the start of a special Moreno Valley Unified School District board study session, pledging to "support and defend the Constitution" and serve the district's students.

California State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurman administered the oath and presented a proclamation recognizing Jackson's appointment and the district's rapid community growth. Thurman urged the new trustee to prioritize early literacy and career-technical education, saying the work "is the most important thing that we can do" and urging local focus on helping students learn to read by third grade.

Jackson thanked family members and educators in the room, singled out former teachers who inspired him, and said he would "double down" on programs that created opportunities for students from his own path through the district. "I want to make sure that there are several more Justin Jacksons that get to sit in front of you," he said, noting his intent to advance access to career pathways and supports for at-risk youth.

Board President Brandy Clark presided over the brief ceremonial portion and the board took no formal action as part of the swearing-in beyond completing the oath and presentation.

The swearing-in took place at the beginning of a study-session meeting that then moved into a Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) review and interactive "world cafe" activities with staff, parents and student leaders. No vote or policy change accompanied the appointment during the session; the board will continue regular business in upcoming meetings.
