Gloucester council opens meeting with minute’s silence and tributes to Terry Haynes

Gloucester City Council opened its meeting with a minute’s silence and a series of tributes to former councillor, mayor and sheriff Terry Haynes, who died over the Christmas period. The Mayor described Haynes as “very knowledgeable about the history and culture of our region” and said he “served Gloucester faithfully.”

Councillors from across the chamber recalled Haynes’s long record of public service, including representing Barton and Treadworth (1995–2002), serving as mayor and sheriff, teaching at Carlton Primary School, and organising community sporting events such as the Treadworth Road Race and activities for Gloucester Athletics Club. Several speakers noted Haynes’s role in the city’s cultural life, including folk music and local festivals.

“People who met Terry throughout the city will remember him with fondness, respect and affection,” one councillor said, thanking Haynes for years of volunteer work and civic commitment. Family members were welcomed to the chamber, and councillors recorded the council’s condolences to Haynes’s relatives and the wider athletics and civic communities.

The tribute moments occupied the meeting’s opening segment; the Mayor asked the council to place on record its sadness and to send condolences to the family. After the tributes the chair reminded members that the meeting was livestreamed and set standards of conduct before moving on to the evening’s formal business.
