Denison planners and commissioners on May 26 recommended the City Council approve a rezoning and a conditional-use permit to allow the Paloma Event Center at 315 West Coffin.
Staff told the commission the applicant seeks to convert the existing structure into an event center focused on family events. Miss York said the rezoning (Case 2026-22Z) would eliminate split zoning on the 1.936-acre parcel and allow the applicant to pursue a CUP for the hall/reception/banquet use (Case 2026-64 CP). "Staff recommends approval of the request," Miss York said, and urged conditions to protect adjacent residences.
For the CUP, staff recommended specific conditions: require the applicant to submit and obtain staff approval for a parking plan and landscape plan before construction; adopt proposed hours of operation (Monday–Thursday 10 a.m.–9 p.m.; Friday–Saturday 10 a.m.–midnight; Sunday noon–9 p.m.); and ensure all building and fire codes are met during remodel. Staff noted the structure has been vacant for some time and said activating and beautifying the site would meet revitalization goals.
An applicant representative told the commission they had no objections to the listed conditions. After closing the public hearing, the commission moved and seconded motions to recommend approval of both the rezoning and the conditional-use permit with the staff-recommended conditions; the motions passed and the items will go to City Council on June 15 for final action.
