Board reviews gifted-education and expulsion policies in first reading

On JKE, the proposed expulsion policy, Witkin described a notable change to the appeals process: the right of appeal was adjusted so the superintendent will accompany the board in any type of appeal. "The student having the right to appeal that was changed . . . to the board," Witkin told the meeting.
The presentations were informational; board members did not vote on either policy tonight. Witkin said the policies would proceed through the normal review cycle and be available for questions before a formal vote at second reading.
Board members asked procedural questions about timing and follow-up. No formal action was recorded in open session on either policy during this meeting; the board indicated second-reading timing and additional committee review would follow. The board also noted an organizational-chart review is scheduled for a future meeting.
